Windrush: The Music, The Sound, The Legacy

This is a heritage and documentary project celebrating the contribution of the Windrush generation and the wider Caribbean community to Wolverhampton’s cultural life.

Through filmed interviews, music, personal memories and community storytelling, the project aims to capture and preserve stories that might otherwise be lost while honouring the impact this generation has had on the city and beyond.

About the project

This project explores the history, influence and legacy of the Windrush generation through the lens of music, community, faith, family and lived experience. It brings together local voices, untold stories and important memories to create a lasting record for future generations.

Our aim is to document the people, sounds, and stories that have shaped Wolverhampton since the 1950s, honouring the Windrush generation as the architects of our city’s resilience—visionaries who, in the face of systemic challenge, anchored the community through the establishment of their own businesses, churches, and social foundations.

Why this matters:

The stories of the Windrush generation are a vital part of British history and local history. This project helps ensure that these memories are recorded, respected and shared. By combining documentary storytelling with music and community participation, Windrush: The Music, The Sound, The Legacy will help inspire learning, reflection and pride across generations. Windrush Day is marked nationally on 22 June each year, underscoring the continuing significance of this history in the UK.
